Task Force for the Homeless Earn-A-Bike
The No Excuses Bicycle Shop (NEBS) is a Community Economic Development project. As a community partnership of Taskforce for the Homeless and Sopo Bicycle Cooperative, NEBS will provide skills training in bicycle repair and safety. Our method of skills training includes opportunities for leadership and mentorship, and it is designed to support participants as they achieve job seeking benchmarks and milestones. The shop will be staffed by Sopo Bicycle Cooperative and Task Force Americorps volunteers. Ultimately, it will be NEBS participants who take on all teaching roles over time.
This project benefits both the Sopo and Taskforce communities, as well as the greater Atlanta community, by developing a thriving economy as we work to develop a transportation system that is environmentally sustainable. This partnership allows these communities to come together to share skills and resources as we collectively pursue the missions of both organizations.
Project Specifics
NEBS members will earn points by learning and demonstrating skills in bicycle repair and safety. Skills may be demonstrated on an individual's bicycle or by teaching skills to another members. NEBS members will also earn points by demonstrate job readiness achievements. Points may be redeemed for bicycles, bicycle parts, and other accessories. Necessary safety accessories will be automatically distributed to all members (helmets, locks, and lights). Participants will be eligible to earn certification in mastery of bicycle safety and repair. Task Force Transitional Residents and Resident Volunteers are eligible to become NEBS members. NEBS will operate on Monday nights, tentatively scheduled to begin in May 2008.
