Our summer internship program is in full swing!

Ermiyas WordofaAban Adoung

Over the past couple of weeks, everyone at Sopo has had the chance to get to know our 2012 summer Iiterns.  For those folks who aren’t familiar with our summer internship program, every June/July, in coordination with the International Rescue Commitee, we get the chance to welcome a group of interns into the shop and get them involved in the work that Sopo does. They learn valuable bike maintenance skills, gain knowledge about how non-profits operate, and get the chance to do some interesting work that helps not only themselves but the greater Atlanta community as well. This program is one of many things that makes our summertime exciting and extra fulfilling.

Aban Adoung

This summer we’re welcoming Ermiyas Wordofa from Ethiopia, and Aban Adoung from Sudan. They had the opportunity to visit the new Sopo space a couple of weeks ago to get their feet wet, become oriented with the shop atmosphere, and start to learn some basic maintenance. Since then they have been an active part of Sopo and have been in the shop regularly working with our usual shop patrons and volunteers.  As part of the program, Ermiyas and Aban are earning a bike, and through that they’re getting the chance to try out the new knowledge and fix up their rides.  We really enjoy having them at the shop and we’re always excited about a chance to get new folks involved in what we do, teach folks about our work, learn something from our interns, and get them riding!

Feel free to stop in to the shop, work on your ride, check out our new space, and say hello to Ermiyas and Aban. We’re really glad they’re with us this summer. If you’re curious about the work that the International Rescue Committee does, check out their website: HERE  They’re a great organization and we really love the opportunity to combine the work that Sopo does with an organization like IRC!
