We very strongly agree with 100% of statistics about Sopo

Thanks to Matt Babski for checking in with the Sopo community to see if we're actually acheiving our mission, and thanks to everyone who participated in his survey!  Matt says, "Congratulations! The results of the [statistics] project show that you are doing an excellent job of providing equitable access" to affordable bike maintenance, services, and education!  We found out that a range of folks use the shop, and all kinds of shop participants are getting what they need from it.  We also learned that word of mouth is our best form of advertising, so THANK YOU again.

4 Years Ago Tonight...

...50+ of us shivered through a power outage in a Reynoldstown home and began organizing something amazing. Special treat after the bump.

Thank you for taking care of the shop...and each other!

The bad news is, and you may have heard already, that your friend Rachael at Sopo (that's me) survived a home invasion, armed robbery, and assault last week.  That's why you haven't seen much of me at the shop lately.  First of all, THANK YOU to everyone who has been taking care of the shop and all of the wonderful people in it.  Secondly, if you're thinking you'd like to help me out, you can volunteer at the shop.  Pitching in counts more to me and Sopo than anything.  Remember, the shop is intended to be a safe space.  Being supportive of all kinds of people is the way to prevent terrible things, like what happened to me, from happening in the first place.  Finally, we're having a benefit on Thursday night at the Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge.  There you'll get a chance to meet City Councilperson Natalyn Archibong, and we'll have progressive organizations there to teach us about their grassroots efforts to create a safe and fair world.  Ride safe, y'all.

Original Broken Hearts Spokecard Sighting

Seen in Little Five Points at Food Not Bombs: possibly the last remaining intact spokecard from our very first Broken Hearts and Bicycle Parts Alley Cat and Benefit Party.  It's hard to believe we're coming up on our 5th one!  Put it on your calendar: March 6 and 7, 2009.

Save the East Atlanta Babies

The East Atlanta Kids Club, a most excellent FREE afterschool program for our neigborhood kiddos, needs our help!  They're in the running for a $10,000 grant that would allow them to hire certified teachers, build out their SAT prep classes, and provide the kids with internship opportunities.  That's the kind of stuff that will keep our babies on the college and vocational tracks!  YOU CAN HELP by voting for the Kids Club HERE.  The Kids Club was instrumental in bringing Sopo to East Atlanta, and we work with lots of their kids.  The Kids Club does wonderful things for them, so let's help out!

Sopo Soapbox Derby Car Co-op?

Thanks to the Atlanta Downhill Challenge for sending new Sopo'ers our way, even if they came to build soapbox derby cars instead of bicycles.  The question we heard the most was: How do I make my car STOP?  Photos ahead.

Make t-shirt, build lowrider, throw party

Peace to Epidemik Coalition for remixing our logo and making the coolest Sopo shirt ever.  We had a great time at El Bar hanging out with those guys.  They were pretty stoked on our gift to them--we built up the Stingray frame they painted for our Art Show and turned it into a lowrider, complete with a black velvet banana seat.  Thanks to Tito and Deck for putting that monster together.  Thanks to Katey for riding the bike right into the bar.  Thanks to Cristo Disco for playing the jams.  Pictures here.

Head over to Inside the Sprawl for a fantastic review of...US!  Our friends at ItS attended volunteer orientation on Monday, which sparked this write up.  Many thanks to Alex and Graham for facilitating orientation, and thanks to everyone who attended!

Tricked out bike of the week

To be fair, there's no competition at Sopo...just cooperation!  But we had to give public credit to Co-coa for tricking out Jennifer's new ride.  It's got style for miles.  Photos ahead.
