A Tale of 2 Noodles

Working on bikes, I see a lot of different parts and designs. On the left is a standard v-brake noodle that is very very common. On the right is the first one of this type of v-brake noodle that I have seen. It is heavier but its simpler with less parts. Both function the same way. The one on the left is lighter with more parts while the one on the right is simpler, heavier but a lot more durable.

How did the one on the left become so common but yet the one on the right was lost to bike history?
